Haverford School Fords Fall To O'Hara, 27-17

The Fords seniors leave winning two league titles.

For some, it was difficult to reflect on the many, many good things they achieved, because the scoreboard on a breezy, chilly gray Thursday, November afternoon read: Cardinal O’Hara 27, Haverford School 17. Dusk was setting in as Haverford School coach Mike Murphy was telling his team—specifically his seniors—how proud he was of their season and careers at Haverford School. All most of the seniors could do was look down, when actually they had a lot to look up about, like two-straight Inter-Academic League championships, and turning the Haverford School program around in their three years many of them had as varsity players. “This was a rough way to finish, but I had fun my senior year, we did do a lot of great things here,” Fords’ …

Exploding Junior Star Matt Galambos Talks Football

The Haverford School junior has college recruiters noticing him.

He was tough to ignore on Saturday because he was omnipresent. Wherever a Malvern Prep player was with the ball, so was No. 47, Haverford School junior Matt Galambos. He made a game-high 12 tackles. He intercepted a pass for a touchdown—the first pick-six of his high school career—and when he wasn’t doing all of that, he was catching passes and causing problems all afternoon for perennial Inter-Academic League power Malvern Prep. As a sophomore, the 6-foot-2, 215-pound linebacker made first-team all-Inter Ac. He’s going to be all-Inter Ac again this season, but it’s coming with a little more added attention. College recruiters are noticing. Penn State, Wisconsin, Boston College, Maryland and Temple have shown interest. It should rise once …

Haverford School Loses Heartbreaker To Malvern Prep, 17-14

Early mistakes cost the Fords.

The postgame talk was quiet, subdued, interrupted by sporadic sniffles and a few muffled groans. Haverford School took its 17-14 Inter-Academic League loss to Malvern Prep hard—very hard. The Fords played well, exceptionally well, but a number of early mistakes wound up costing them, and consequently, cost them any chance of a third-straight Inter-Ac Title. It was just a bitter, bitter defeat to swallow, since it literally came down to the few inches it took a 36-yard field goal attempt to skid off the crossbar and fall over for the difference. The loss snapped Haverford School’s streak of two-straight Inter-Ac titles, with two games left for the Fords against rival Episcopal Academy and Cardinal O’Hara in a makeup game from postponement …

Fords Give Penn Charter A Frosty Defeat, 28-7

Chris Dibello scored his first touchdown on his first interception in Fords' 28-7 victory.

It brought back memories for everyone on Haverford School’s football team. The nasty, premature wintry weather that arrived on Saturday was treacherous for anyone on the roads trying to get somewhere, or simply walking down the street. There were fender-benders, fallen lines and downed trees all over the place. But for a group of kids playing a snowy field, it was heaven. It rekindled those great times in their past when every kid on the block met at a vacant field to play pick-up games of tackle in the snow. And in Saturday’s contest against Penn Charter, the snow game might not have meant more to anyone than Haverford School’s two-way lineman Chris Dibello. Playing in his last home game as a senior at Haverford School, Dibello, the Fords…

Blocking Punts A Specialty At Haverford School

“Our special teams coach saw something in (Germantown Academy’s) protection and we went after it,” Fords’ coach Mike Murphy said.

The Haverford School did a number of positive things in its 55-0 whitewash of Germantown Academy last Friday. But perhaps what stood out the most was the Fords didn’t block not one, not two, not three, but four punts—with three of the four leading to touchdowns. With the victory, the Fords moved to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the Inter-Academic League. Haverford School’s Anthony Hill and Sema’j Reed each blocked a punt, with Reed picking up the blocked punt and scoring. “Our special teams coach saw something in (Germantown Academy’s) protection and we went after it,” Fords’ coach Mike Murphy said. “But special teams is something we take seriously here, and something we work on every week in practice. We cover everything, including blocking …
