Haverford School Shines In Season Opener

Tao Xu is rapidly adjusting to American basketball.

There was a stir among the larger-than-usual crowd for a Haverford School season opener. Then he walked on the court, and the answer came: They were there out of curiosity to see Tao Xu, the 6-foot-11, 265-pound transfer student from China. Instead, what the crowd saw was quite possibly the best Haverford School team in decades. The Fords led from start to finish in their season opener, putting a hurting on New Beginnings, a charter school from Chester, 83-56, Wednesday afternoon. Haverford School was led by senior Zach Thomas, who dropped in a game-high 23 and sophomore Eric Anderson chipped in with 19. Haverford School's Giant Import Getting Used To Teammates

Tao Xu is adjusting fast to American basketball.

He’s in the United States a little over a month and Tao Xu has already quickly immersed much around him. The 6-foot-11 senior transfer student from China has picked up the Haverford School offense, while still dealing with the language barrier, but maybe the most surprising element of the Chinese 19-Under National Team player is his constant humility. He’s even willing to grab a towel and mop the court of sweat after a teammate just went crashing to the floor. The Fords just began practice last week and Haverford School basketball coach Henry Fairfax is easing in his new player. Xu is coming off a back injury during the summer and Fairfax doesn’t want to push his star too much at the outset. So Xu stands back and takes everything in, …
