Do you push your child in sports?
As the Olympics draw to a close, we’ve seen amazing feats of athleticism from some very young athletes. We’ve swelled with pride as Team USA brought home medal after medal. We’ve seen the stories of the road to their success for them and their families. We’ve seen athletes who train in their hometowns, living with their families and others who move states away to be with the best coaches. We’ve heard stories of severe injuries and amazing recoveries. We’ve seen athletes win medals and athletes miss the mark, but all of them under extreme pressure with a desire to succeed and earn gold. Weekend Local Olympic Recap: see who won what.
If you missed it, this was a weekend filled with Olympic wins for athletes from our area. One gold medal and two bronze medals won at the 2012 Olympics this weekend have links back to our area. Lisa Raymond Wins Bronze The most recent medal was won by Lisa Raymond, of Upper Providence and formerly of Wayne. Raymond lost in the bronze medal match for women’s doubles Sunday, taking fourth place. But hours later, Raymond and partner Mike Bryan, earned a bronze medal in the mixed doubles match up with a win. Hansen was part of the men’s 4x100 team with Michael Phelps.
Havertown’s Brendan Hansen is taking home another gold medal in the 2012 Olympics. Hansen swam the breaststroke leg of the men’s 4x100 with teammates Michael Phelps, Matt Grevers and Nathan Adrian. The team came in first with a time of 3:29:35, with Japan coming in second and Australia coming in third, according to the London Olympics website. The race’s attention was centered largely on the race as Phelps’ last one. “He’s basically enabled us to keep swimming at the age of 30,” Hansen told NBC. “You’re sharing a pool with a guy you’re going to want to tell your kids about some day.” My 6th Olympic medal will be one I'll never forget. Want to know what it’s like going to the Olympic ceremonies? Olympic Archery Coach Cindy Bevilacqua updates us on what’s been going on in London.
Olympic Archery Coach Cindy Bevilacqua took a few days off from blogging this week, but she’s posted two new blogs to catch us up: July 25 The team was able to do a Familiarization for the warm-up field and the final main field they will be shooting their matches on. The warm-up field is to be able to allow oneself to get acquainted with having the field the same direction and the wind and lighting. Each team is allowed a half hour and then your escort to the final lanes to shoot your matches. This can be quite intimidating but, with the help of your training system and mental game the archers handled this quite amazingly. They stayed calm and went though their process of shooting that arrow for the 10 ring (very center of the target). …

The Haverford swimmer will compete Sunday.
Haverford’s Brendan Hansen will compete in the 100-meter breaststroke finals on Sunday after advancing to the final round on Saturday, according to the 2012 Olympics website. Hansen won the eight spot in the eight-man final after finishing the 100-meter with a time of 59.78. Area residents can watch Hansen compete for the gold at 11 a.m. on Sunday on NBC.
