Haverford School Star Hoopster Looks Toward The Future

Tao Xu is ready to take the next step in his development.

It’s been an interesting year for nearly 7-foot Chinese exchange student Tao Xu.The starting The Haverford School center went from parachuting into a new country, hardly knowing the English language, to becoming very welcomed and quite immersed in what has been a very gratifying experience not only for him, but those around him. Now the next step. The 6-foot-11 Xu has achieved senior status and took the SAT for the first time Saturday, March 10. He’s received considerable interest from Drexel, Penn, Niagara and Princeton. Xu may need to take an extra year at a junior college, if he does not reach the SAT qualifying score, but it appears Xu is headed in a good direction. “It’s been fun to watch Tao develop,” Fords’ basketball coach Henry …

Haverford School Loses By One To Germantown Academy

The Fords had trouble converting free throws in crucial spots.

Shawn Alton pounded the ball hard on the court out of frustration when the final seconds ticked away. It was the exclamation point to another maddeningly tough loss for The Haverford School, after the Fords fell to Germantown Academy, 60-59, Friday night to drop to 5-3 in the Inter-Academic League and 15-8 overall. It should be noted the Fords played without 7-foot-junior exchange student Tao Xu, who was suspended for the game because he received two technical fouls and was ejected from the Fords’ previous game against Penn Charter, a Haverford School victory. It also should be noted that the second technical call came when Xu saluted the Haverford School fans that attended the game, something he’s done this whole season without receiving …
