Haverford High Sophomore Has A Special Day For Someone Special

Kevin Leyden was exceptional for the Fords, playing in memory of his father.

Kevin Leyden wears a white rubber bracelet around his right wrist. It serves as a reminder of someone dear, someone the Haverford High School sophomore will never forget—his father Mike, who died of cancer at the age of 48 back in April of this year. Leyden gave his father a special treat on the first Thanksgiving Day without him. The 6-foot, 170-pound tailback proved to be one of the game’s heroes, coming on to replace senior Mike Gentile, who left the game with an injured right shoulder. Leyden rushed nine times for 70 yards—all in the second half—to help Haverford hang on to a 21-16 victory over Upper Darby, which was on the Haverford 7-yard line with :02 left in the game when a big sack ended it for the Fords. For Leyden, the game held…

Haverford High Wins Memorable Thanksgiving Day Game, 21-16

The Fords overcame some manpower issues to beat Upper Darby.

They lingered a little longer than everyone else. The Haverford High School seniors had to savor it one last time, inhale the moment and fill their lungs with it so this special game on this special day will always be a part of them. There’s a good chance everyone on Haverford’s football team that participated in the Fords’ dramatic 21-16 Thanksgiving Day victory over arch rival Upper Darby will remember it. Haverford finished 7-5, winning seven games for the first time since 2007, when the Fords advanced to the PIAA District 1 Class AAAA playoffs and went 8-4. A number of Haverford seniors played vital roles, like the game’s offensive MVP, Mike Clancy, who rushed for 70 yards on 17 carries and scored a touchdown, Dylan Hewitt, who scored …

Joe's Notes

Quietly Successful Senior

Mike Gentile is a "full-time player."

He’s gotten a little lost in the woodwork of the Haverford High School football team this season. Mike Gentile is the kind of player a football coach can appreciate, because the keen eye of a coach sees all of the little things that amount to the large things someone like Haverford senior defensive back/wide receiver can do on a football field. He has no time to rest. While other players play one side of the ball, Gentile doesn’t come off the field. “Michael is a full-time player for us; offense, defense, special teams, he’s been leading the team in receptions,” Fords’ coach Joe Gallagher said. “He’s had a very strong season for us. He’s also our free safety that runs the defense. Our defense is built around our free safety and he’s had a …

Miscues Stymie Haverford High

The Fords lose to Garnet Valley 37-13.

Friday night at A.G. Cornog Stadium, Haverford High School played Garnet Valley tough early, but eventually succumbed to quarterback Ryan Corkery and the Jaguars no-huddle offense. Garnet Valley improved to 9-1 on the season, while the Fords fell to 5-5.   1 2 3 4 Final Haverford High 7 0 0 6 13 Garnet Valley 14 9 7 7 37 IN SHORT To beat a team like Garnet Valley—who, at 9-1, sits atop the Central League standings—the Fords would have had to play near-mistake free football. Friday night at home, they decidedly did not. The Haverford Fords fumbled twice and gave up a safety before 20 minutes had been played and despite an admirable defensive effort, fell to the Jaguars 37-13. On an evening full of mistakes, the Ford's first cut was the …

Joe's Notes

Some Sacrifices Are Recognized

Mike Clancy had to be a quarterback for the Haverford High School Fords even though he is not one.

Mike Clancy’s stats won’t blow anyone over. That’s because the Haverford High School senior has had a big chunk of his rushing numbers taken away from the major sacrifice he made through the first part of this season. When junior quarterback Eddie Durkin was unable to play through the early portion of the year nursing a broken right hand, it was Clancy that stepped in to replace Durkin. The thing is, Clancy is not a quarterback. The Fords got off to a rocky start, and Clancy’s rushing numbers suffered. He had the thankless job of being the square peg wedged into the round hole that was fitted for Durkin. “I can’t say enough about what Mike Clancy did for us,” Fords’ coach Joe Gallagher said. “He did make a major sacrifice for this team by …

Haverford High Loses Tough One To Conestoga, 22-20

The Fords district playoff chances were erased with the defeat.

It didn’t seem as if anyone could look up. All they could do was study the tops of their cleats and think of something different they could have done. Haverford High School saw its postseason hopes evaporate in a hard-fought, but critical 22-20 loss to Conestoga Friday night. The Fords kept battling. They kept clawing, and scratching, and made what seemed like a game that they were losing control of suddenly competitive. But in the end, the Fords knew they had to win two straight to earn a spot in the PIAA District 1 Class AAAA playoffs. Dropping to 5-4 overall probably ended that hope, while Conestoga remained alive with a 6-3 record. “This game was played with a playoff intensity,” said Fords’ junior quarterback Eddie Durkin, who did …
