Local Students Win National Merit Scholarships

The 2,500 Merit Scholar designees were chosen from a pool of more than 15,000 finalists.

  Local students are amongst those who are National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners. According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, the 2,500 Merit Scholar designees were chosen from a pool of more than 15,000 finalists in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors, according to the corporation. Newsweek Ranks Haverford Among US High Schools

The magazine's 2013 rankings came out Monday.

On mobile? You can see interactive map here. Newsweek has ranked Haverford High School as the #742 high school in the country. Locally, Conestoga High School in Berwyn was ranked #124, Harriton High School #219, Strath Haven High School #291, Radnor High School #255, Lower Merion High School #321, Springfield High School #648 and Marple Newtown High School #1096. In Pennsylvania, Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School in Philadelphia received the highest ranking of #56. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. Haverford Students Win Theater Honors

Students celebrate school theater season at 2013 Philadelphia Area Cappies

  After a walk down the red carpet it was on to honors inside for high school performers from Haverford Sunday at the 2013 Cappies Awards. The annual awards honor student actors, technicians, musicians, designed and theater critics in the greater Philadelphia region. 37 public and private schools in the city and surrounding counties are nominated and awarded by student theater critics.  The critics themselves are also among the award nominees and winners presented with trophies.  Before the show at the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center at Upper Darby High School, nominees walked the red carpet in formal wear and in some cases in costume from shows and musicals presented during the current school year.
