Volunteers 'Deck the Halls' at Delco Nursing Home

A local art group spruced up the buildings of Fair Acres over the holiday.

They may not look like elves, but they have the same Christmas spirit.

In the run up to the holiday, a group of four creative volunteers took time out of their hectic schedules to decorate Christmas trees and brighten the buildings of Fair Acres—a Delaware County skilled care facility.

For the past eight years, Pat Goodall and Clair Hagan of Springfield, have enlisted their art group, the Brandywine Decorative Painters, to craft ornaments for display on Christmas trees in the lobbies of numerous Fair Acres buildings.

Goodall and Hagan are both retired teachers who have ties to Fair Acres—Goodall as a 15 year volunteer in the Fair Acres gift shop and Hagan a former activities director.

The Brandywine Decorative Painters is a Tri-State organization that meets once a month to discuss, craft and prepare for various outreach projects they volunteer for each year. Members vote on a specific theme for the holidays based on projects that are presented to the group.

This year the volunteers took on the task of refurbishing all of the ornaments with a fresh and fun "Let It Snow" holiday theme. Every Christmas tree is decked with glistening blue and white snowflakes, 50 of which are stenciled from recycled compact audio disks.

"Along with the handmade ornaments, we're putting up trees, putting up wreaths on the doors and putting up lights," said Cheryl Everngham, director of volunteers at Fair Acres.

Goodall and Hagan were joined in the project by fellow Decorative Painters Sue Ulmer and Carol Davis, also retired teachers from Springfield.
