Fireworks Damage Havertown Property, Commissioner Says

The Fourth of July and fireworks go hand in hand, but one Haverford commissioner is warning residents to stay away from illegal fireworks.

In an email to his constituents, 1st Ward Commissioner Stephen D'Emilio says he’s gotten complaints about people setting off fireworks and damaging property.

D’Emilio warns of the risk of causing serious damage by setting off illegal fireworks and says the police have been instructed “to enforce the laws of Haverford Township relating to the use of illegal fireworks during the holiday.”

I have received numerous complaints regarding residents shooting off fireworks in the past couple of weeks.  These “fireworks” are high grade fireworks which are not purchased in our area.  They have caused minor damage to cars and property.  They also have the potential to start a fire as embers have been viewed landing on homes, cars and grassy areas several blocks from where they are being launched.

While I also enjoy fireworks, the Township will exhibit a zero tolerance towards the use of illegal fireworks.  The police have been instructed by the Township Manager to enforce the laws of Haverford Township relating to the use of illegal fireworks during the holiday.

The risk of a catastrophe is real and fire can rage for hours after the embers land.  Fireworks are dangerous and have the potential to injure or maim the individual setting them off.  Let’s enjoy the 4th of July with family and friends and leave the fireworks to the experts.
