Summer Academy begins July 9th at Haverford Middle School

Find a class or two in the Summer Academy 2012 at . Open to students who will complete grades 4 through 8 as of June, Summer Academy 2012 will be held Mondays through Thursdays, July 9th through August 2nd, between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at Haverford Middle School.

Online and mail registration are now open for the 31 courses offered at Summer Academy 2012. Complete information is available at www.haverfordedfoundation.org/summeracademy2012.html.

Color Your World: Drawing & Painting
Grade: 4-6 Fee: $180 Teacher: Samara Talkin
8:30-10:25 • July 9-12 and 16-19
Explore color while drawing, painting, and cutting paper to make artwork. Learn how the colors of the spectrum can create beautiful effects. Basic color design will be taught, along with drawing and painting techniques, suitable for all levels of experience!

Fun with Baking
Grade: 4-6 Fee: $210 Teacher: Donna Scoleri

What’s more fun than making and eating tasty treats? Learn the basics of reading recipes, measuring ingredients, and mixing everything to make some favorite recipes.

Visit Spanish culture through its language and cuisine. Explore the customs of Mexico, Spain and Puerto Rico and learn foods and phrases common to everyday life. Make and sample traditional dishes from these countries.

JA More than Money

Even kids needs to know how to make, use and manage money. Use good financial decisions while playing the JA More than Money board game. Identify jobs you can do to earn money and even work with a group to play the Business Game with your team’s own business plan and company logo you'll design! We’ll play simulation games to reinforce our new money-management skills.

Finish your summer reading project in a fun place and with friends! Curl up with a good book on the beach bean bags, a picnic blanket, in the pillow nook, or “camping” under the stars. Read and discuss any books you’re reading this summer. Students may sign up for multiple weeks for as much reading time at this beach as their schedule permits.

Retell folk tales through dramatic performance, singing, instruments, composition, improvisation, movement and dance. Students will present a final performance that showcases their work.

So You Want to be A Star? Performer’s Experience

Stars will shine brightly as we practice all aspects of the performance arts: playwriting, auditioning, character development, directing, singing, acting and dancing. Through 4 weeks of games, music, personal and group exploration, we will dive into combining efforts to culminate a final musical theater performance.

Papercrafting in 2D & 3D

Create visually exciting 2-D art and 3-D sculptures with the wonderful art of papercrafting! Think outside the crayon box and expand your artistic vision for creating greeting cards, exploring other cultures and cutting paper to create unique works of art.

Hurricane Alert E-Mission
Grade: 4-8 Fee: $210 Teacher: Jana Fitzpatrick

Do you want to be a storm chaser? Become a weather expert as we analyze data, assess the severity of the storms and make life-saving recommendations for residents in harms’ way as part of our Hurricane Alert E-Mission. Teams will analyze scientifically accurate data to learn how hurricanes form, how they are named and how to track them. We will connect via satellite to a Flight Director at Mission Control and work together to analyze date and handle a problem situation as the storm unfolds. 

Hi-tech Storytelling: Intro to Filmmaking
Grade: 4-8 Fee: $210 Teacher: Rodney Whittenberg

Lights … camera … action! Learn all aspects of video/film production, from script writing, to acting, to editing. We’ll enhance our films through the use of blue and green screen and other digital effects.

Set it to Music: Intro to Songwriting & Recording
Grade: 4-8 Fee: $210 Teacher: Rodney Whittenberg
10:35-12:30 • July 23-26 and July 30-Aug. 2
Write, record and produce your own song. Learn the art of songwriting and the technical skills required to produce and record. Meet recording professionals who will share their tips for hits. Some musical experience will be helpful.

Robotics: Engineering & Design
Grade: 6-8 Fee: $210 Teacher: David Corsi

Design & create a robot to complete a task. Brainstorm ideas, design all the parts of a robot, wire your creation and watch it go!

Create your own website using Google’s free tools. Design an attractive website that includes proper use of pictures, links, embedded video, and more. We’ll discuss Internet etiquette.
