State Of The Fords

The Haverford School coach Mike Murphy feels his team can handle Chestnut Hill Academy.

coach Mike Murphy feels his team is right where it should be entering the Fords’ Inter-Academic League season opener at Chestnut Hill Academy on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Haverford School, the two-time defending league champs, is 3-1 overall and Murphy likes the way his offense and defense is playing.

“I really like the way our kids are playing up front, and we have five senior linemen that bring experience, and it allows us to do a lot of different things, which makes us tough to prepare for,” Murphy said. “I think offensively, I’d give us a ‘B,’ and defensively, a ‘B-plus,’ and there is room for improvement on both sides of the football.”

Chestnut Hill is a solid football team that beat Monsignor Bonner earlier this season, but last year was the first time Haverford School beat them under Murphy in his seven years as coach of the Fords.

“Chestnut Hill has a very strong running team, Cedric Madden rushed for close to 350 yards against Hill School, and I know (Chestnut Hill) coach Rick Knox very well, coaching together for six years at Episcopal Academy,” Murphy said. “There won’t be a whole lot of surprises. This game will be about which team executes better. My message to my kids with the Inter-Ac is to throw out the nonleague schedule, the Inter-Ac is one of those leagues where each week, you have to come to play.”
