Megan Meier's Mother Recalls Daughter's 2006 Suicide

While hosting a cyberbullying summit on Monday night at , Tina Meier recalled her 13-year-old daughter's suicide that resulted from cyberbullying.

Megan Meier, who suffered from Attention Deficit Disorder and depression, was allowed to create a MySpace account in 2006 when she was in the eighth grade under strict guidelines set by her mother:

  • She was not allowed to know her password.
  • Her profile was kept private.
  • Her mother approved photos, music and layouts, but not Megan.
  • Computer in open space, not in private place, like her bedroom.
  • Had program that monitor instant message and Web pages that Megan Meier would visit.

But because a former friend of hers thought that Megan, 13, was spreading rumors about her, her mother, Lori Drew, created a fake account — Josh Evans — so she could secretly befriend Megan Meier and find out if she was spreading lies about her daughter.

Megan Meier begged her mother for her to accept a Josh Evan’s friend request, and as Tina Meier told the audience, she allowed her daughter to accept the friend request.

While things went well between the two, things took a turn for the worst.

“The message from the night before from Josh to her, ‘You heard me, no one likes you. No one wants to be friends with you,’” Tina Meier recalled.

Megan Meier became so distraught over the mean-spirited comments left by Josh and other people that after a fight with her mother, she ran up to her room.

“I just got this absolute horrible feeling throughout my entire body. I took off running up stairs to Megan's room and I opened the door and found her hanging from her closet,” she said.

Megan Meier was in a coma and died the next day, Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006. She was just three weeks shy of her 14th birthday.
