Haverford School Getting Physical

More time will help the Fords.

came within 27 seconds of being undefeated, but the Fords couldn’t contain West Catholic and , 18-14, in dropping their first game this season and going 2-1 overall.

What Fords’ coach Mike Murphy found out, however, was how sturdy his offensive and defensive line is playing against the large, aggressive West Catholic front.

“We are a physical football team, but we need to finish plays when we have an opportunity to put a team away,” Murphy said. “We were up 14-0 and we came out and stopped them on first drive of the second half. We didn’t execute a play we needed. Our kids up front on both sides really controlled the football game and did a nice job. That’s kind of our thought this year, and West Catholic was a big team up front and we kind of matched up well with them.”

Haverford’s offensive linemen Chris DiBello and Lou Moeller were exceptional, creating gaping holes for the Fords’ backs, and on the defensive line, Semaj Reed and Grant Jamgochian put pressure on West Catholic all night.

The Haverford School has a bye this week and will play against the Philadelphia Public League power George Washington on Thursday, Oct. 6 at Northeast High. The 12-day layoff is a big reason why Murphy made sure to reschedule the Cardinal O’Hara game for Friday, Nov. 18 at O’Hara, at 2 p.m.
