Haverford School Dominates Germantown Academy, 55-0

The Fords needed to erase a gut-wrenching loss the previous week.

The hurt stayed with a little longer than the Fords expected. Haverford School is the two-time defending Inter-Academic League champions and a hunted team by every league opponent they face. It’s why they can’t afford any stumbles.

Well, a slight trip came last week when the Fords dropped a discouraging 7. It grated on the Fords, the stench of it clung to them into early this week.

The Fords needed a remedy to shakeoff the blahs and that came in a resounding 55-0 blowout of Germantown Academy on Friday at Haverford School. The Fords improved to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the league with the victory, while Germantown Academy fell to 3-3 and 0-2 in the Inter-Ac.

The performance could not have come at a better time for Haverford School.

“We did need this, I remember getting on the bus after (the Springside Chestnut Hill) loss and how tough that was,” said Fords’ senior quarterback James Chakey, who threw for a season-high 211 yards in completing seven of 10 passes and three touchdowns, connecting on bombs of 33, 44 and 83 yards. “I’d say that loss still stayed with us until Monday or Tuesday of this week. Then we switched it on Wednesday and everything worked.”

It was a seamless transition, it seems, from the way the Fords practiced to the way they played against Germantown Academy, which threatened to score only once and crossed midfield only once. The majority of the game was played on the Patriots’ half of the field, as Chakey, along with Matt Galambos, Anthony Hill, Zach Rego, Lou Moeller, Chris Dibello and Sema’j Reed, were all over the place.

Haverford School blocked four punts, converting three of the blocks into touchdowns. Aron Morgan nailed a 40-yard field goal to close the first half, and Galambos, a stellar linebacker, had a career game with four catches for 123 yards, including a career-long 83-yard touchdown reception.

“We needed to bounce back from last week,” Galambos said. “We needed a
victory like this. We had to play a complete game, and build some confidence off of this."

The game was over at halftime. The Fords took a 31-0 lead into intermission, behind two touchdown passes by Chakey and set up by a stubborn defense and two blocked punts.

Haverford School began its first six possessions in Germantown Academy territory. A fumble recovery by Moeller on the second play of the game made the first score possible. Chakey connected with Rego on a fourth-and-eight play from the Patriots’ 33, and Rego did the rest, zipping through hollow swipes by Pats’ defenders.

Chakey scored on two-yard rollout, thanks to a Pats’ turnover, giving the Fords a 14-0 lead with 6:39 left in the first quarter. Chakey would hit Chris Morgan for a 44-yard touchdown pass to close out the first-quarter scoring. Germantown Academy ended the initial quarter without a first down and a paltry nine yards of offense.

Early in the season quarter, the Hill blocked a punt at the Germantown Academy eight-yard line, and Hill was given the call the following play, when he took a handoff eight yards for another touchdown and a commanding 28-0 lead.

Aron Morgan topped the first-half scoring off booting a 40-yard field goal that might have been good from 50 yards, and the Fords went into the lockerroom with a comfortable and a commanding 31-0 lead.
