Haverford Middle School Choir Places Second

The Haverford Middle School choir Seventh Heaven placed second in B101 Radio's Christmas Choir contest for division 1.

After two days of voting and making it into the final round for B101 Radio's Christmas Choir contest, Haverford Middle School's choir Seventh Heaven placed second for division 1 on their rendition of "Carol of the Bells."

Haverford Middle School beat out Eleanor Rush Intermediate School and Haddon Heights Elementary School in the semi-final rounds and came in just behind Saint Katharine Drexel Regional Catholic School's concert choir's rendition of "Angels We Haver Heard on High." Third place for division 1 went to Cold Spring Elementary's sixth grade chorus for their rendition of "Hot Chocolate."

Haverford Middle School's Choir Director Jackie Serratore expressed her gratitude for the support received from the community.

"We are so thrilled that for the first year entering this competition we came this far," said Serratore. "I was shocked at how many people voted, supported, and cheered for us throughout the school and the community. Haverford Middle School, school district, and community made us feel like winners and we are. Our song is getting air time on B101, we won $2,000, and we made our new principal (and biggest cheerleader) Dan Horan proud!"

Though she isn't sure how the choir will spend the $2,000, Serratore said she will sit down with Horan to brainstorm ideas on how to best benefit Seventh Heaven.

"Recording equipment could be nice, offsetting costs towards trips could be useful, but we'll definitely sit down and think of what we can do for these students who worked so hard," said Serratore.

Haverford Middle School was up against a slew of school districts in the region for air time on B101 Radio's Christmas Choir contest. Nearly 10 school districts had competed for votes in the first round to make it into the semi-finals.

"I'm so incredibly proud of these 38 students and I know the entire school district and community is as well," said Serratore.

The first place winner received a brand new Cunningham Studio upright Piano, valued at $7,990, for their school's music department and an opportunity to perform at the Kimmel Center with Peter Nero and the Philly Pops. Second place winners received a cash award of $2,000 and third place $1,000.
