Haverford High School Star Quarterback Returns

Eddie Durkin explains the frustrations of breaking his right hand.

Eddie Durkin has been waiting … and waiting.

6-foot-1, 185-pound junior quarterback has been waiting almost 11 months, to be exact, to throw a football in a game again.

He started every game as a sophomore and was going to be the focal point of the Fords’ offense this season, until he broke his right hand this summer. Durkin will make his first start this Thursday night when the Fords travel to Octorara for a nonleague game. Haverford is 2-3 overall and are 2-2 in the Central League.

“I feel terrible over what happened; I made a huge mistake (breaking the hand) and if I didn’t do that, I’m not sure what our record would be right now,” Durkin said. “I’m going to approach every game like it’s my last and I’m playing like a senior. I can’t wait to get to play and hopefully make this a good season. We know we can do it, make the district playoffs.”

The Fords will switch Mike Clancy, who basically gave up his senior year to play out of position as the Fords’ quarterback while Durkin healed, back to running back. The move makes Haverford that much more dangerous the last two months of the regular season.

“But this has been very frustrating, I can’t even explain it,” Durkin said. “I hope we can turn this season around—and play the way people expected us to play. We have a very good offensive line and we have some weapons. I am putting a lot of pressure on myself, but in some ways, I like pressure. I hope we’re going to be a different team the rest of the way.”
