"The National French Contest (Le Grand Concours) is an annual event sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French.  This rigorous test assesses the listening, reading and grammar mastery of students from all over the country.  Over 75,000 students took part in the exam this March and as always, Haverford students acquitted themselves with distinction.

At the French IV level, Linda Hoffman scored the highest score of all HHS scholars and was recognized as a regional winner as well as ranking 14th nationally. The following French IV students also were recognized  for their outstanding success: Rachel Zou was 16th nationally, Nina Fichera, Jacob Gross and Emily Miller tied at 17th nationally, Anna Garson was 18th, and Jordan Sessa was 19th and Kelly Jiang was 21st in the nation.

"Peter Durlacher, a sophomore at Haverford High School, was recently named the recipient of the Global Citizen Scholarship awarded by the Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Only ten students in the United States receive this prestigious scholarship, given in recognition of proficiency in the target language.

The scholarship covers the cost of tuition for a two-week Spanish immersion program through Concordia Language Villages, located in Michigan... To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must have ranked medal placement in the 2010 National Spanish Exam and be registered to take the 2011 National Spanish.

Peter scored in the 99th percentile on the 2010 National Spanish Exam and received a Gold Medal, the highest award. Peter received notification of his award on March 15.   A week later, Peter was notified of a second prestigious award.  He is the recipient of the  Academic Achievement Scholarship and will attend La Academia de España in Barcelona.

The Foundation for International Education selected Peter from among candidates from America, Canada and overseas. Peter will spend the month of July in the Oxbridge Academic Programs’ Residencia Universitaria.  The international faculty at La Academia de España includes scholars and academics, as well as artists, photographers and writers.  The program offers the opportunity to gain cultural enrichment as well as a total immersion in the target language.

Peter will be engaged in a schedule which combines intellectual and extra-curricular opportunities. He will participate in field trips, speakers’ conferences, activities and sports," explained Haverford High School Spanish teacher Joan Kane Judice of what the Global Citizen Scholarship and Oxbridge Academic Program Scholarship are and why Durlacher was awarded them.
