3 Elementary Schools Get Early Dismissal Due To Heatwave

The school district will be having an early dismissal for three elementary schools that do not have air conditioning.

The Haverford School District stated on Wednesday morning that there would be a 1 p.m. early dismissal Wednesday for three elementary schools in the area.  

Students of , and Coopertown Elementary School will be let out early because of the expected heatwave and the excessive heat warning that the National Weather Service has issued for Wednesday at noon until Thursday at 8 p.m.

Since the other schools within the district have air conditioning, the district stated that there would be no early dismissals for them.

The , that the three Havertown elementary schools do not have air conditioning, which prompted Rene Wick, co-president of the Lynnewood Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization, to say being in Lynnewood is, “just oppressive” when the temperatures are sweltering.

Rick Henderson, business manager for the Haverford Township School District, stated in the article that he did not know what the cost would be to install air conditioning into the schools, but it would be unlikely in the near future.

“Usually funding would come from a bond issue or in better times general fund monies,” Henderson wrote. “However, given the current economic and funding environment, AC in the remaining schools is not likely ...,” he wrote in an email to Patch.
