Haverford Middle School Students Participate in National Mix It Up at Lunch Day

HAVERTOWN— On Friday, October 25, students in all three grades at Haverford Middle School participated in “Mixed It Up at Lunch” to promote school community and tolerance. Joining a national campaign launched by Teaching Tolerance a decade ago, Mix It Up at Lunch Day encourages students to identify, question and cross social boundaries.  Students were assigned random seats in the cafeteria and moved out of their comfort zones to connect with someone new over lunch. Each table had prompts that were designed to stimulate conversation and act as ice-breakers to get the conversation moving.

Kim Alexander, Developmental Guidance Teacher at the Middle School headed up the event and explained, “Our goals to promote tolerance among the students and to help the students form connections outside of their social groups are school-wide and we believe that this lunch-time activity strengthened ties within the school community. Students were asking if we could do it again this year.”
