Haverford High School Students Celebrated Dia de los Muertos

HAVERTOWN—Haverford High School students celebrated Dia de los Muertos in a very authentic way.  Mrs. MacConnell's Spanish class hosted the event centered around the holiday that students have studied for a month.  The Spanish students gave fellow students and community members a tour around the displays and explained the unique holiday.

On November first and second, Mexicans believe that their loved ones who have passed away return each year for a visit.  To honor deceased family members, Mexicans cook their favorite meal and go to their gravesite to clean and decorate their grave.  Because of Mexicans strong belief that death is not the end of one's journey, they are able to laugh at death and celebrate loved ones who have passed away without constant sadness and grief.

At Haverford High School, students made an ofrenda, an offering or memorial to the deceased, which was displayed for all visitors to see.  These ofrendas were very moving and artistic, including traditional and personal mementoes such as flowers, pictures, lace, colorful fabric, skulls, along with a few of the deceased’s favorite things. Additionally, guests were invited to taste authentic Pan de Muerto, or Dead Bread, which the students prepared.  Papel picado, ornately cut tissue paper, was hung to decorate and provide a festive feel.
