Coopertown Students Read for the Record over Skype

The Librarian at Coopertown Elementary School, Christina Brennan, is committed to growing her students' love of reading.  She arranged for her students to skype with a 4-5th grade class of students in Iowa to read Otis and the Puppy by Loren Long as part of Read for the Record Day.  The Van Meter Community School District located near West Des Moines, Iowa is a K-12 district of 650 children housed all in one building.

Read for the Record is sponsored by Jumpstart.  According to the organization, "Jumpstart, a national early education non-profit organization, today announced that its 2013 Read for the Record campaign has successfully broken the world reading record, surpassing last year’s record of 2.3 million adults and children who participated in 2012. The campaign, presented in partnership with The Pearson Foundation, is the one day each year when millions of individuals come together to celebrate literacy by breaking the world record for the most people reading the same book on the same day. On October 3, 2,462,860 adults and children read Otis, by Loren Long."
