May Is Older Americans Month

Delaware County Council alerts seniors to the services and activities available to them.

Senior citizens are invited to activities geared just for them during May, which Delaware County Council designated Older Americans Month in recognition of the many contributions senior citizens have made to the community.

During Older Americans Month, council wants to alert seniors to the services and activities available to them, particularly through the Delaware County Office of Services for the Aging (COSA).

Seniors have lived through wars and hard times, as well as periods of unprecedented prosperity. They pioneered new technologies in medicine, communications and industry while spearheading a cultural revolution that won equal rights for minorities, women and disabled Americans.

“Their shared histories, diverse experiences, and wealth of knowledge are valued year-round, but May is set aside to shine a spotlight on our senior citizens,” said County Councilman David J. White.

There are over 106,000 residents in Delaware County, almost one person in five, who are at least 60-years-old and classified as senior citizens.

COSA was established in 1975 by the County Commissioners and has served thousands of older residents, especially those needing in-home or skilled care services to maintain their quality of life. COSA’s goals include enabling seniors to remain in their homes and communities as long as possible. Programs include community and in-home services, information and referrals, victims services and insurance counseling.

At the May 9 County Council meeting, White read a resolution recognizing May as Older Americans Month.

“Older Americans Month is a celebration of the contributions Delaware County’s older citizens have made to society, and is a chance for the community to give back and recognize the accomplishments of their elders,” said White.

Delaware County is joining communities nationwide in celebrating the 2012 theme “Never Too Old To Play” by offering special activities and events that promote aging actively and living life to the fullest.
