Haverford School Board Member Larry Feinberg Honored With Statewide Award

Pennsylvania School Boards Association former president travels to Havertown

Haverford Township Board of School Directors member Larry Feinberg was lauded by the Pennsylvania School Boards Association on Thursday night at a Haverford Township School Board meeting.

Roberta Marcus, immediate past president of the Pennsylvania School Boards Association (PSBA), presented Feinberg with the Timothy M. Allwein Advocacy Award, which Feinberg first received at the PASA-PSBA School Leadership Conference in Hershey on Oct. 19.

The first annual award was established in 2001 in honor of Tim Allwein, the PSBA's former assistant executive director for Governmental and Member Relations, who passed away unexpectedly earlier this year.

Marcus said recipients of the award are selected based on their impact on legislation or legislators in regard to advancing public education, generating support and raising new awareness; mobilizing grassroots advocacy; and raising public awareness among state policy makers, media and the general public.

The award recognizes outstanding leadership in legislative advocacy efforts on behalf of public education and students, Marcus said.

“I personally nominated Larry,” Marcus said, adding that Feinberg received nearly 90 letters of recommendation for the award.

He chairs the Keystone State Education Coalition, which he co-founded in 2006, and is also chairman of the Delaware County School Boards Legislative Council and a PSBA liaison.

Feinberg has provided testimony before both the PA House and Senate Education Committees, the PA Independent Regulatory Review Commission, the PA House Republican Policy Committee and the Governor’s Task Force on School Cost Reduction.

Through daily emails, Feinberg informs school board members, administrators, legislators and other interested parties about local, state and national education issues, Marcus said.

“Larry was chosen unanimously to receive this award,” Marcus said.

Marcus said she knew Allwein well and she was sure he would have been “very happy” that Feinberg had received the award.

Marcus also thanked Feinberg’s family members, who were sitting in the audience.

“Larry does this 24-7, 365 and this comes at a cost…” Marcus said.

Feinberg thanked Marcus.

He said Allwien “was a close personal friend” and also “an inspiration and a mentor."
