Female Chickens Welcome, Roosters Not in Haverford Township

Apparently not everyone wants a 5 a.m. wake-up call.

Complaints from some residents about noisy roosters in Haverford Township has prompted the Board of Commissioners to approve a prohibition on keeping male chickens in the township.

“Roosters are in the township, and it’s upsetting to the neighbors ... It’s a noise and privacy issue, people not being able to sleep," the Delco Times quotes commissioner Jane Hall as saying.

"Provisions also revised requirements for maintaining fowl, including chickens, ducks, geese, guinea fowl, domestic fowl, roosters, swans or turkeys," the newspaper reports.

“Making a change like this does affect decisions about home purchases,” the Delco Times quotes resident Ann Phillips as saying. “Deciding to take roosters out is going to be a personal decision to me."

In neighboring Radnor Township, its Board of Health has made recommendations for a one-year pilot program that would allow residents to have “backyard” chickens on their properties. In preliminary discussions it was recommended that roosters not be allowed.
