Toyzer Waives Preliminary Hearing to Court of Common Pleas in FedEx Case

The preliminary hearings for former Newtown Township secretary Gwen Toyzer, Supervisor George Wood, Tax Collector Marie Richards and assistant to former township manager George Clement Jr. were held on Aug. 18 at a Springfield Township district court.

SPRINGFIELD–A preliminary hearing scheduled for the FedEx scandal that broke earlier this year involving a , was held on Thursday, Aug. 18, at Springfield Township's District Court #32-2-54.

On Thursday, Toyzer showed with her attorney in front of Judge Anthony Scanlon to waive the preliminary hearing to the Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia. An unsecured bail bond was set for $20,000 by Scanlon. Toyzer's case will go before the Court of Common Pleas on Sept. 15.

A criminal charge was filed against Toyzer, of Havertown, by the District Attorney's Office in May for allegedly using Newtown Township's FedEx account for personal use, billing a total of $1,086.57 in shipment charges to 35 separate personal deliveries around the U.S. that occurred between October 2006 to January 2011.

According to the affidavit, there were 29 shipments made to the Customer Returns Department of Jewelry TV in Knoxville, TN, for a total of $922.73 shipment charges made. Six additional shipments were made to various individuals including family members and other online retail stores such as Venus Swimwear and Ann Taylor Loft, totaling to $163.84.

In addition to the investigation that ensued by the District Attorney's Office, three other criminal charges were filed against Wood, Tax Collector Marie Richards and George Clement Jr., assistant to former Township Manager Jim Sheldrake for similar accounts but with smaller amounts being charged to the township FedEx account.

According to the affidavit, Wood had allegedly charged $21 to the FedEx account for personal use, $32 allegedly charged from Richards and $90.76 allegedly charged from Clement.

All three preliminary hearings for Wood, Richards and Clement have been continued for hearing on Sept. 1.
