Relatives: Police Car Hits Woman

Haverford police said woman walked in front of patrol car.

The on Wednesday at the West Chester Pike and Washington Avenue was actually hit by a Haverford Township police car, said relatives of the woman and confirmed by the Haverford Township Police Department.

The woman, Mary Noone, 73, was crossing the street on Wednesday at around 1:30 p.m. when she was hit by a police car, her sister Margaret McKown told Haverford-Havertown Patch.

On Thursday, McKown and brother Jim were at the Haverford Township Police Department requesting the accident report, as was Patch.

“Well, thank God she’s pretty good. She’s very lucky I guess,” Margaret McKown said. “Her legs were fractured. Both bones in her left leg were fractured. They have to put a rod in it.”

Noone will have surgery on Thursday, said Margaret McKown, who could not stay at the police department long because she and her brother were heading to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where her sister is staying.

She said that she would not comment on the accident since she was not there, but her brother was not happy with the police.

“I was just a little surprised that nobody from department come around the house and let us know anything about it,” Jim McKown alleged.

The police department stated that the accident report would be ready by either Friday or Saturday.

However Sgt. Shant Bedrossian of the department returned a phone call left to him by Patch. He called the accident “tragic.”

The officer in the patrol car was in the left lane going westbound on West Chester Pike when he saw Noone cross the street and stopped in the right lane, Bedrossian said, adding that the officer was on a normal patrol.

The officer slowed down and noticed that Noone stopped walking and stared at him, Bedrossian explained. The officer was under the impression that because Noone stopped and looked at him that he could go on, but that is when Noone walked out in front of his car, Bedrossian said.

The officer, who has not been named, treated Noone and called for the Haverford Township paramedics, Bedrossian said. When they arrived, they took her to an undisclosed location where she was airlifted to the Hospital of the University of Penn.

“It’s a tragic accident. I hope she makes a full recovery,” Bedrossian said.

Bedrossian said that there will be an internal investigation into the accident.

A second message was left for Bedrossian to comment on Jim McKown's statement regarding the alleged lack of police communication.
