The Delaware County Chamber of Commerce announced Michele Daly as the 2012 ATHENA Award recipient during a special reception held at Margaret Kuo’s Peking restaurant at the Granite Run Mall on October 24.
Daly, a social worker who has been in the non-profit world for 40 years, has been the Executive Director of the Women’s Resource Center for the past five years. The Center is dedicated to helping women who are going through crisis and transition.
ATHENA Selection Committee Chair Alice Strine, ESQ introduced Daly, and explained that the prestigious award is given to exceptional female leaders who are helping other women in the community to reach their full leadership potential.
“All nominees are considered winners, and all are considered leaders,” said Strine.
The national ATHENA Foundation, Strine explained, is dedicated to creating leadership opportunities for women, and each year one recipient is honored for achievement, service, and assistance to others. The individual helps women reach their full potential through mentoring and providing employment or education opportunities, as well as contributing time and energy to improve the quality of life for community members.
A humbled Daly said she is honored to receive the award.
“I’ve been very fortunate to be in jobs and positions that allow me to help women and families who really need the help. I accept this award for them,” she said.
Another notable achievement Daly is most proud of is her role in helping pass a bill in the Pennsylvania State Legislature granting grandparents the right to request custody of their grandchildren. As a result of the legislation, it’s estimated thousands of children have been saved from abusive homes by caring grandparents.
In recognition of these and many other accomplishments throughout her decades of work in Delaware County, the ATHENA Award will be presented to Michele Daly at the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce Awards Gala on Thursday, November 8 at the Drexelbrook Corporate Events Center in Drexel Hill.
