Police: So Far So Good at U.S. Open

Any issues were "expected," Sgt. Shant Bedrossian says.

As of the start of the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club on Thursday morning, everything was going as planned (except maybe the weather), said Sgt. Shant Bedrossian of the Haverford Police Department.

Bedrossian told Haverford Patch that the influx of car and pedestrian traffic caused delays, but it has been manageable and anticipated .

He said no police services to the township have been disrupted. "Our services for the public are at full strength and we're responding to all service calls in the township." Those calls may have increased Thursday morning as a severe thunderstorm left thousands without power in the Philadelphia area.

Bedrossian said people from more than 60 agencies, including State Police, the FBI and Homeland Security are here assisting with the effort. Oakmont Fire Company are at the event in case they are needed.

Some officers are on the streets surrounding the golf club to direct traffic; others get to help escort famous golfers around the course.
