Oakmont Fire Co. at the Ready at U.S. Open

The fire company has 12 members at the championship tournament at all times.

The Oakmont Fire Co. is the official fire company of the U.S. Open.

There are 12 people from the volunteer fire company at the tournament stationed at Haverford College, the Merion Golf Club club house and at Darby Road and Ardmore Avenue.

As of Wednesday afternoon, there had only been a couple of minor calls for the company, said  Buzzy McGolderick, vice president of the company, and John Straub, captain.

They have a fire truck, but also a golf cart, which is easier to navigate through the crowds. So, what might happen that they would need to deploy? A brush fire, a fire in one of the many tents or a generator fire are all possibilities, Straub said.

But they're happy to be there. "It's in our back yard," Straub said. "This is once in a lifetime."
