Moms Talk: Where To Take The Kids?

Need some parenting advice?

Each week in Moms Talk, the Haverford-Havertown Patch’s Moms Council of experts and smart moms take your questions, give advice and share solutions.

So grab a cup of coffee and settle in as we start the conversation today with a question: With school almost over, where are some fun, affordable places to take the kids?

Answer from Mom’s Councilmember Emily (mother of 2): Aside from the usual playground activity, we plan on checking out some of the local arboretums (Tyler, Jenkins, etc) and their summer exhibits.  Rose Tree Park has a summer concert series which is free and has a wide variety of music.  If your kids like bowling, many of the lanes offer free kids' bowling in the summer time.

Answer from Mom’s Councilmember Denise (mother of 1): Playing outside with her friends is one of my daughter’s favorite things to do.  They like to color with chalk and run through the sprinkler.  On days when it is extremely hot, I will set her up with an art and craft indoors to do or a book to read.  Some of the local movie theatres offer free movies over the summer so we take advantage of that from time to time as well.

Answer from Mom’s Councilmember Julie (mother of 3): We try to hit all the local playgrounds. We plan picnics for breakfast, lunch and dinner there.  We also like to do day trips to the beach. To keep the cost down we pack all our snacks and drinks. Another thing that we do is attend the summer activities at the library. We have attended everything from story times, Lego club and science. The library will also give prizes when you complete certain tasks, such as reading or participating in their activities. The best part of the library activities is that it they are free.
