Moms Talk: When Your Child's Grades Drop

Need some parenting advice?

Each week in Moms Talk, the Haverford-Havertown Patch’s Moms Council of experts and smart moms take your questions, give advice and share solutions.

So grab a cup of coffee and settle in as we start the conversation today with a question: When your child's grades start to drop?

Answer from Mom’s Councilmember Denise (mother of 1): If my child was struggling in school, I would first do what I could to help her by taking extra time to review and study with her.  If that is not a success, I would request a meeting with her teacher to ask for extra help and advice.  If necessary, I would seek a tutor.

Answer from Mom’s Councilmember Emily (mother of 2): I would do a little digging to see if there is something else going on in the child's life that would cause their grades to be affected, especially in the case of an older child.  You can always provide some extra dedicated one-on-one time at home, free from distractions.  If a little extra help at home doesn't remedy the situation, I would contact the child's teacher to see what their recommendation and suggestions would be.

Answer from Mom’s Councilmember Julie (mother of 3): If my child’s grades were slipping, I would first set up a meeting with the teacher and get his or her input on what the problem is. I would ask the teacher for recommendations on what we could do at home to boost those grades.  I would follow up with the teacher and any recommendations that he or she may have suggested.
