Moms Talk: What To Do On Long Rides?

Need some parenting advice?

Each week in Moms Talk, the Haverford-Havertown Patch’s Moms Council of experts and smart moms take your questions, give advice and share solutions.

So grab a cup of coffee and settle in as we start the conversation today with a question: What To Do On Long Rides?

Answer from Mom’s Councilmember Emily (mother of 2): This is a question that I can use some help with myself.  Besides the usual DVDs, activity books and I Spy game, we've had better luck trying to do some of the driving (if it's a really long trip) while the kids would normally be sleeping, either at nap time or late at night/early morning.  Also we try to stop every couple of hours so they can get out, run around and change scenery.

Answer from Mom’s Councilmember Julie (mother of 3): On road trips we like to listen to kids’ books on CD. We do not have a DVD player and the kids love looking at the books while listening to the story. The kids also color, draw, look at books and play I spy … I spy a red car, a tree etc. The newest thing we have tried is road bingo.  The board is set up like a bingo board and they have to find the picture’s as we are driving … it’s sort of like I spy.  Who even gets five in a row wins.

Answer from Mom’s Councilmember Denise (mother of 1): Kids have many more options for entertainment in the car then I remember having when I was a kid.  They have portable DVD players, hand held games, iPods, etc.  Lately, it seems like these things have become boring to my child, so I have been trying some of the things my parents did with my siblings and I when we traveled. For example, counting how many cars of a certain color you see or how many buses.  I also like to bring information books about where we are going to describe different activities we will participate in and also the history of the destination.
