Moms Talk: How To Pick Great Day Summer Camps

Need some parenting advice?

Each week in Moms Talk, the Haverford-Havertown Patch’s Moms Council of experts and smart moms take your questions, give advice and share solutions.

So grab a cup of coffee and settle in as we start the conversation today with a question: How to pick great day camps for your kids during the summer?

Answer from Mom’s Councilmember Julie (mother of 3): When I am looking for a summer camp for my children, I do a few things. I ask my other friends that have children and see where they send their kids. I call those camps and see if it is a good fit for my family. I have to consider cost and if it has activities that my children enjoy.  I also check the Internet and some local camp guides. Again I am looking at price and seeing if it has activities that my children will enjoy.  Last, but not least, I make sure it is a safe environment for my kids.

Answer from Mom’s Councilmember Denise (mother of 1): When I choose summer camps for my child, I normally start looking into places that are recommended to me by other parents.  I am not looking for camps as a daycare, but more of a way to keep my child active and entertained during the summer break.  She enjoys arts and crafts, sports and spending time with her friends so I often look for places that offer these types of activities and try to send her with at least one friend so she is not by herself.  The most important factor I take into consideration is that the camp has all of their background checks complete and it is a safe place to send my child.
