Moms Talk: How To Find Some 'Me' Time

Need some parenting advice?

Each week in Moms Talk, the Haverford-Havertown Patch’s Moms Council of experts and smart moms take your questions, give advice and share solutions.

So grab a cup of coffee and settle in as we start the conversation today with an important topic: How to find some "me" time.

Answer from Mom’s Councilmember Denise (mother of 1): It is often difficult as a parent to find time for yourself.  One thing that I try to do is stay up after I put my daughter to bed.  Since I work full time, I like to make time to do something with her where we can both relax, so every once in a while, we go for pedicures together.

Answer from Mom’s Councilmember Emily (mother of 2): Time for yourself as a parent is so easily lost and forgotten, but it's important to take time. There was a period of time I would get up before everyone else (even though I hated getting out of bed so early) so I could go for a run.  I also do a lot of things after 7 pm, when the younger one is in bed.  Lastly I can't stress how important good babysitters have been for us.  This has been invaluable for maintaining our marriage.  It's nice to get out alone with your spouse, even for just an hour or two.

Answer from Mom’s Councilmember Julie (mother of 3): I try to grab some “me” time whenever I can, which is not often. During the school year this year, things got a little easier. My oldest was in school all day,  my middle child went to kindergarten in the afternoon,  and my youngest went to pre-school in the morning three days a week. On Tuesday’s, my youngest would stay at pre-school until 2 p.m. and I would get an hour to myself. In that hour, I vowed to do nothing house or school related and just relax, whether it was a coffee at Starbucks or lunch in my nice quiet kitchen. I also try to take at least 20 minutes a day to work out on my elliptical, which I was sadly ignoring for a while.  It is amazing how better I feel after beating myself up on that machine.  I am better focused and have a lot more patience for my children.
