Delco SPCA Calls for Citizen Help in Preparing for Hurricane

The Delaware County SPCA needs assistance with animals and supplies in preparation for Hurricane Irene.

The is calling on the citizens of Delaware County and surrounding areas to help the Media shelter as Hurricane Irene heads for the area and the . 

The SPCA is in urgent need of short-term foster homes for the animals currently living in the shelter.

Temporary, one-week foster homes would ensure the safety of the homeless animals. It would also free up space in areas closest to windows and doors in order to keep the animals in the shelter away from possible danger.

To prepare for the storm the 80-year-old shelter is securing its roof and windows as well as calling for donations of the following supplies:

  • Bottled water—regular and distilled
  • Flashlights
  • Batteries in various sizes
  • Dog and cat crates
  • Dog and cat food
  • Dog collars for dogs 45 pounds and larger
  • Masking tape and duct tape
  • Home Depot and Acme gift cards.
  • The shelter is also asking for the temporary loan of a chainsaw in case tree limbs need to be cut immediately.

The shelter will be open for adoptions from 12 to 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, offering drastically , with the possibility of closing early on Saturday if the storm excels.

The shelter will be closed on Sunday.

Employees will be staying overnight on Saturday to ensure the safety of the animals.

While the shelter will not be an emergency animal boarding facility for owned pets, some municipalities have emergency animal shelters in place. For more information, contact your local municipality.

In order to keep your pets safe in the storm, keep them away from windows and doors. Crating erratic or anxious animals is encouraged as animals tend to get unpredictable in natural disasters. Also, make sure pets have collars with IDs and dog licenses in the event that they get out in the storm.

The Delco SPCA is offering walk-in microchipping on Friday and Saturday for $35.
