25,000 People Expected Daily at U.S. Open

Haverford Township's Deputy Chief of Police John Viola updated the Board of Commissioners about preparations for the golf tournament.

In just a few short weeks Merion Golf Club will be the center of the world — at least, the golf world.

According to Main Line Media News, Deputy Chief of Police John Viola updated Haverford Township's Board of Commissioners on preparations for the 2013 U.S. Open, which will run June 10 to 16.

With an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 spectators expected daily, according to the newspaper, preparation, crowd control and traffic control have been a top priority of the police.

The United States Golf Association has a comprehensive transportation plan for moving spectators to and from remote parking sites, Viola said, adding that police have met and continue to meet with commissioners and neighborhood groups to explain detours and address concerns.

Detour signs will start going up this week, with traffic press releases to follow shortly thereafter, Viola said.

He also noted that PennDOT agreed to keep all four lanes of Township Line Road open for the event after officials voiced concerns about PennDOT’s plans to close all but one lane in each direction for bridge repairs to a station at Grove Place and Route 1.
