Crossroads Coffee House in Drexel Hill is one of the most unique places I have ever been in my life. It’s a bona fide independent coffeehouse connected to a branch of a local bank. I don’t think you can get much more corporate than a bank branch or more indie than a coffeehouse which features local artists but somehow the two entities coexist under the same roof.

I had been to the and loved it. The talented bakers of Crossroads make their own brioche, desserts and pretty much everything else on the menu. How would the Drexel Hill sister store compare? I was greeted by the friendliest man on earth. My “How are you?” was answered with, “Great. I’m always great!” and he looked like he actually meant it.

I ordered a small iced coffee and turkey club to go. I walked over to the clean condiment/sugar/napkin area and fixed myself a perfect balance of coffee, sugar in the raw and milk. I couldn’t get over seeing the variable rate charts, bank tellers and people making deposits right in front of me as I sipped my drink—it was just so bizarre.

The coffee at Crossroads is the star. They use high quality beans from small producers. The beans are almost always Fair Trade and a far cry from the dishwasher blandness that you find in most chain restaurants.

My turkey club on whole grain toast was delicious. While I usually lean towards ham and cheese sandwiches, I had a hankering for something a bit more heart healthy that day. The turkey was flavorful and obviously not from a deli roll. The romaine lettuce and tomatoes were fresh and tasty. I love tomatoes in my sandwich in the summer when they are actually in season. It makes a world of difference.

There was just a touch of mayo and no need to add salt or pepper (I season everything I eat usually.). There was just the right amount of bacon for me. A few crisp and chewy slices were all the sandwich needed.

The space is quite clean and office-y with a little flavor thrown in. The décor looks like the lobby of a mid range hotel where everything is beige with some random art work and TVs throughout.

As mentioned above the service is stellar. It’s nice to know that whether I am in Drexel Hill or in Roxborough, I know I can find a great cup of joe and a tasty morsel, any time of day.
