ACME to Open Friday

There was an invite-only preview of the new flagship grocery store Wednesday afternoon.

With full, neatly lined shelves, the Bryn Mawr  in Haverford Township is ready for business on Friday.

The new store, reopening just over a year after it , is 37,000 square feet—13,000 square feet larger than the old store. The property straddles both Haverford and Lower Merion townships, and the project added a left-turn lane to the eastbound lanes on Route 30/Lancaster Avenue at Pennswood Road.

The new, larger store includes ACME's third gluten-free deli and a much larger prepared food section with a Tony Luke's Grill, said ACME President Keith Wyche at an invitation-only open house Wednesday evening.

"It's really great to see ACME building new stores," Wyche said. "It's the first new store since 2008, and we've been in Bryn Mawr since 1956. In the Delaware Valley, people love ACME, and we want to give them another reason to love ACME."

ACME has brought more of a focus to its produce sections, since it is the first thing customers see when they enter the store, explained Steve Sylven of SuperValu, ACME's parent company.

They have also worked to fit the store to the neighborhood, Sylven said.

Bryn Mawr Business Association President Kathy Bogosian said she thought the new store looks great.

"Bryn Mawr and the whole area really needs it," Bogosian said. "I think it'll bring a lot of people back to Bryn Mawr."

Lower Merion Commissioner Scott Zelov said it is a great day for Bryn Mawr.

"It's a store that everybody wanted," Zelov said. "The community, ACME, the townships—everybody worked together. Now I won't get asked every day, 'When's the ACME opening?' "

Haverford Township Commissioner Jeff Heilmann said he will be glad to not have to drive to the Newtown Square ACME anymore for his groceries.

It iss a project that was still in the beginning stages in 2007 when he was running for commissioner, Heilmann said, adding that it is nice to see the finished product five years later.

In comments at a ceremony Wednesday evening, Zelov said this is just another example of Lower Merion and Haverford townships working together; they also helped , he said.

Zelov also alluded to as "another construction project down the road" that was not moving as quickly as the ACME did. The library's grand opening is now projected to coincide with the second event Sept. 8.

ACME's grand opening will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, during which company will be making $5,000 in donations to local organizations including $2,000 to the Ada Mutch Food Pantry.
