“Without tradition, our lives would be as shaky as a fiddler on the roof,” says the main character Tevye in the opening number. According to Summer Stage, "A poor dairyman in 19th century Russia, Tevye and his wife Golde, along with their five daughters, attempt to live respectable lives despite the threat of imminent revolution. With the hopes of marrying off their daughters to men of some means, Tevye and his wife cling to old traditions, while their daughters defy them, wanting to marry for love instead of the custom of pre-arranged marriages."
