Congratulations, you just bought a top of the line computer system, and you have the bill to prove it. You made a couple of errands on the way home to the local GameStop or Best Buy, and purchased the latest video game, and can’t wait to get home and start playing it. But something strange happens after you fire the computer up and install the new game. It doesn’t work. How can this be when you have a brand new top of the line PC? Three words: On Board Video. Your new rig might rock, but it isn’t going to play anything that’s graphically intense without a video card installed.   This is just …
Google TV is here. I wanted to shed a bit of light on this amazing new technology, so I decided to dedicate a column exclusively to this product. I first heard of it back in December while watching television one night, and quickly dismissed it as just another fancy gadget, but the more research I’ve done, the more I realize this can be an amazing innovation in the way we surf the Internet and watch T.V. Some of you may remember a product back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s called Web TV. The square box slightly resembled a VCR or DVD player, which hooked up to the back of your TV and …
The Internet is a vast jungle of information to navigate, especially when you’re searching for those diamond in the rough programs. There are plenty of useful programs out there that most people might not know about. I would like to introduce you to a few that I have found handy over the years. These applications can be incredibly useful to anyone that’s trying to find something new and helpful. Frank Leveque, owner of All Brands Appliance & Computer Service in Havertown, recommends starting with “Belarc Advisor,” and I completely agree. This program is amazing plain and simple. It allows the…
With a large host of viruses that are readily available and ready to wreak havoc on you’re computer, it’s important to know what to do in the unfortunate event that your PC or laptop becomes infected.   First and foremost, if you don’t have a virus protector on your computer, that should be number one on the list of things to do. Without virus software, you’re leaving your computer completely open to anything that comes along. The type of software you decide on should be based on your needs. If you surf the net for hours on end, while visiting many unfamiliar sites, you’re going to want to …
The integration of technology is a fact of life in these modern times. There once was a time when most of the gadgets we use were separate from each other, but that is no longer the case. Do you remember when the iPod was launched and changed the way we listen to music forever? Well as much as we'd hate to admit it, the iPod is becoming obsolete since our phones now have the ability to download and play mp3s music. This is just one example of how this is happening at a very fast rate. I don't feel that this is neither good nor bad, but it's happening whether we like it or not. Our cell phones…
Communication rules our world today. The phone app is just one of the many innovations that are changing the way we live. No longer do we use a cell phone to just make calls, in fact it's only one of the many features we are offered. With the advent of phone apps, our phone literally turns into a mass multi-media product. There are some top applications that are available that you might not know about. Some come in really handy, while others are somewhat useless, but cool nonetheless. And yes, they are all free! Who doesn't enjoy gazing at the sky on a clear night? One of the coolest apps I …
I have been an avid Mapquest user for about 10 years now, and even though my GPS sticks securely to my windshield, I still use my Mapquest as a back up. But which one is better, and why are there so many people still reliant strictly on printed directions alone? There are many positives and negatives to both of these, and because I only use Mapquest or Google maps in case my GPS fails, I find it hard to rely on that alone. Let us first look at printed directions. With an accuracy of about 98 percent, it is a fairly reliable way to find where you're going. But what happens when it takes you …
Let's face it. HDTVs are here to stay. Whether you love them or hate them, one thing is clear—the picture. If you're reluctant to make the switch to high definition (HD) or if you're considering it, but aren't quite sure what it's all about, there are many factors to consider when making the jump. There are such a variety of price ranges, resolution levels, brands, sizes and types, that it may seem overwhelming at first. Start by taking into account what your budget is and what size TV that will complement your living space. Since screen sizes can vary from 20 inches all the way to 60+ …
When looking back on the past 12 months, I find it hard to believe how anything can top the amount of tech devices that were launched this year. We've been presented with many new and innovative products that out-number any previous year to date. So as 2010 winds down and comes to an end, I would like to present you in no particular order, with what I feel were the top 10 tech products, and explain a little about each one of them. 1. The iPad — It's not a laptop, it's not a desktop. So what is it? It's many things, but essentially the iPad is a tablet computer marketed by Apple Corporation …
The computer world is a vast jungle to navigate in this day and age, with advancements in technology making it even more difficult for anyone inexperienced to feel lost in the shuffle. If you're thinking about purchasing a computer this holiday season for yourself or a loved one, there are many things to take into account. The good news is that with prices rapidly dropping on computers, you can easily score a decent laptop or desktop for $500 or under. First and foremost, you should decide which type of computer is right for you. Jumping in blindly is not the way to go. If you're on the move…
