For one Democratic candidate, there is one word that describes the reason behind his party’s defeat at the polls: Apathy. “It goes back to the old thought that you can’t get Democrats excited,” Tom Shiffer, the Democratic challenger and candidate of the 1st Ward commissioner’s race, told the Haverford-Havertown Patch Tuesday night at the Haverford Township’s Democratic post-election party at the Oakmont National Pub. The Delaware County Election Bureau has an unofficial count of votes for the candidates running for various positions for Haverford Township. “Results are posted as received from machine totals only. Results do not include Absentee, Provisional, or Remote Military votes,” according to the election bureau’s website. Unlike the rain and clouds during the mid-term elections back in May, both Democrats and Republicans alike agreed that the sunny, almost spring-like weather for Election Day helped with voter turn out. But before polls closed at 8 p.m. throughout Haverford Township, candidates were doing a little last minute campaigning, urging people who were walking into the various buildings to vote for them. Darin Hayton decided it was time to stop complaining and instead try to make some changes. Hayton, a 44-year-old Democrat, is challenging incumbent Republican Commissioner Jeff Heilmann in the November general election for the 5th Ward commissioner seat in Haverford Township. Haverford Township 5th Ward Commissioner Jeff Heilmann may encounter some new competition in the future. Heilmann, the Republican incumbent, is squaring off against Democrat Darin Hayton in the November general election as they vie for the 5th Ward commissioner seat.
