The Perfect Weekend For Camping

Did you ever have one of those perfect weekends with your children? Well I just did.

My son Antonio is a member of the local Cub Scout Pack and because of that we have done many things together that we normally wouldn’t have. This weekend was one of those times. We spent the weekend camping out at Merry Place on Glendale Road.

Have you ever been there? If you haven’t you should really check it out. Besides the playground, there is an amazing structure to climb on and many places to hide. There are also tennis courts and volley ball courts. The most amazing part of this park for us was the hiking trails. There were so many places to walk and climb and an amazing creek to fish in if that is your cup of tea.

When we first got there we sent up our tent, with a lot of help from Antonio’s Pack and Den leader. Ok he did most of the setting up, but I think we may be able to do it the next time. Then we had free time to explore and have a great time getting familiar with our surroundings.

At dinner time the den leaders and assorted others cooked dinner which consisted of hamburgers, hotdogs and baked beans. All tasted incredible out in the fresh air. After dinner when it got dark, we had a camp fire. We roasted marshmallows, made smores, sang songs, told stories, and even acted out short skits. What a blast that was, the boys really got involved and had a great time.

After that we watched a movie under the stars and had the best homemade popcorn. After that was sleep. Surprisingly, we both slept very well and were woken up at 7 a.m. by cries of “Breakfast is ready!!”

I don’t know about you but that was a pretty nice was to be woken up. After a yummy breakfast of eggs, sausage, fruit, cereal, coffee (the coffee was for the grownups) Antonio and I attempted to pack up. We successfully did so and then headed out to do more exploring before we headed home.

Antonio made a bride of sticks with another scout and explored all over the woods. We had such a great time.

I am looking forward to having many more weekends like that. Maybe we should attend a family scout camp over the summer? Try some real camping? What do you think?

I have been camping before at some camp grounds in NJ. The key to a good camping trip is the weather. I camped last year and it rained half the time. The mud, dirt and constant feeling of being damp ruined the trip.

I can imagine. We were truly blessed that the weather was perfect.
