Nothing Shakey About Haverford School’s Quarterback

James Chakey's is a "good decision maker" on the field.

sits at 2-1 and the Fords have looked good in all three games this season.

Part of the reason is how senior quarterback James Chakey is running the offense. He’s thrown five touchdowns—in one half—this season in a and directed the Fords to a comeback in their season opener.

The Fords run an option offense that’s filled with many decisions. Chakey has been right most of the time.

“James plays within our offense,” Fords’ coach Mike Murphy said. “I tell him when I need a hero. What we want is for James to play within our structure, and some say it’s a high-risk offense, but it’s an offense about decision-making.

"The first thing a quarterback needs to run an option offense, and it’s a triple-option offense, is an understanding how it all fits together. James is a confident decision-maker. You need to make decisions in a quick amount of time. James has a good feel for that; he’s doing a nice job. James has a nice combination of being able to throw and run. A lot of option offenses can’t throw the ball, and Chakey can do both, which is a nice option to have.”
