Superintendent, Police: Transformer Mishap Reason Behind M.S. Evacuation
Haverford Middle School may be open on Tuesday.
Haverford Township Police and the superintendent said the reason why the Haverford Middle School was evacuated Monday afternoon was due to a construction mishap with a transformer.
At 1:28 p.m., the police and the Brookline and Bon Air fire companies responded to an emergency incident at the middle school, Sgt. Shant Bedrossian told the Haverford-Havertown Patch at the scene. PECO was also at the scene.
While doing construction work behind the north end of the middle school with a backhoe, construction workers accidentally severed the feed to a transformer, Bedrossian and Superintendent Bill Keilbaugh each told Patch separately. This killed power throughout the whole school.
There was no fire and the evacuation was a precautionary measure, said Keilbaugh, with he and Bedrossian adding that no one was injured.
According to them and the middle school's website, the school safely performed an emergency evacuation and no one was injured.
All students were immediately transported to Haverford High School. Bus students left from the high school for home at 2 p.m., while walkers were released at 2:30 p.m.
The school's website warned: "Parents, if you are picking up your students, traffic may be very heavy! Please be patient."
As for school Tuesday, Keilbaugh said a decision would be made later Monday night. The district plans on classes occurring, but that depends on the availability of a generator to power the transformer.
The school district will reach out to parents for information on school for Tuesday, Keilbaugh said.

That what you get when you hire illegal aliens and have them operate heavy equiment. The school district is supossed to pay the prevailing wage.I have been on this job and a lot of these men that are working on the middle school are not American Citizens. Has anybody checked there Green Card?

A Operating Engineer would have felt that vault in hs controls, stevie wonder would have felt that vault in the vibration of the bucket. The men that are working on the Haverford Middle School should be skilled so that this type of deadly accident never happens again.Somebody from the labor board and the Imigration service should check this job, number 1 to make sure that the Contractors are paying there employees union scale and that same person is a United States Citizen.I drive by this Construction site on my way to work around 530 in the morning and see a lot of vehicles going in, and all of them have out of state license plates. The local tradesman should come first but there is always a problem when it comes to these two boards handling any type of development with any type of fairness. If I had kids in that school and was sitting home why some unqualified hack did my job I be pretty pissed off!

People who aren't in unions have just as much right to work as those in unions! i know someone who works at this school and has over 20 years of experience in the construction field. He is highly skilled and in demand as companies call offering him work!

I'm not talking about the person you know, i'm talking about illegal immagrants and the people who come here from out of state who are taking jobs away from me ! How does the operator dig and sever a wire feeding a transformer that knocked out the whole school ! Somebody screwed up and I just hope next time nobody gets hurt or killed.

Cari you say, that you know someone that has 20 years experience in the construction trade. What trade and does that person have a license to practice that trade in the town that they are working in? Union tradesman that belong to a trade union in Philadelphia are very highly trained The standards are much more realilistic and construction related than a substanard pupil that graduates a vo tech course. This type of accident would have never happened if the Operator of that piece of equiment was trained by the Operating Engineers Local Union 542. Once again bad politics that almost cost somebody there live.

Yes, and yes to all of your questions! This person has gone through extensive training and is extremely skilled at his trade! He chooses not to belong to the union! The accident was caused by one person who for some reason tried to speed up what the others were doing properly. I also know that they stayed until extremely late that night to make sure all the kids could return to school on Tuesday. The union/non-union battle will go on forever, in my opinion no one is better than the other....I know you have your opinion and I have mine, but we are both allowed to, that is why we both live in the United States! I am sorry you are not working, I wish you luck and hope that you are back to work soon! No one that wants to work should be laid off!

Cari you said yes to all my questions but you didn't answer any of the them.I doubt that anybody on the Haverford Middle school job has a trade license and if they do, they bought one for 3 grand, I wonder if anybody has there Havertown trade license on there person? Nice try Cari, but s--t only floats for so long! Shake it easy! P.S the person that is trained by the private trade guilds in Philadephia is far better trained in construction business than any of the construction personal that I have encountered on the Haverford Middle School Job. By a hundred fold!

Cari, oh Contrair. I am working and just arrived home to see your response to my post about the under performing unqualified unlicensed workers that are working presently on the Haverford Middle School job. I would take that trained licensed union electrican that is out of work right now and put him up agaist any 2 out of country out of state, unlicensed electricans anyday of the week! . Cari if B.S. was music you would be the Philadephia Orchestra! The person you say you know that is on the Middle School right now better be getting paid the pevailing wage rate and if there not, I hope they are entitled to it.
