Each week in Moms Talk, the Haverford-Havertown Patch’s Moms Council of experts and smart moms take your questions, give advice and share solutions.
So grab a cup of coffee and settle in as we start the conversation today: What is the best way of getting the kids out the door in time for school?
Answer from Mom’s Councilmember Julie (mother of 3): My biggest trick for getting them out the door without too much hassle or stress is to plan the night before. All the kids clothes are planned for and laid out so all they have to do in the morning is put them on.
I have all the kids lunches made and all that is left to do in the morning is to put them in their school bags. I also have the breakfast set up for the next day so all they have to do in the morning is just eat it. All this planning really does help and makes our mornings fairly simple and stress free.

What do you do if you have a slow eater? I allow extra time for my daughter to have breakfast before school at a semi-leisurely pace, but still I find myself saying "Time's up! Gotta catch the bus now!" sometimes before she is done. She also moves at a snail's pace getting out of bed, getting dressed and brushing her teeth. I don't want her mornings to be stressful with me constantly being her "Hurry Up!" cheerleader. What else can I do besides what you mentioned above?

Hi Laura,
The thing that has worked for us the best, unfortunately :-), is getting up earlier. Then when they do move at the snails pace, there is time and if for some reason that day they are quick, there is extra time. If all else fails, they take their breakfast to go. We have dry cereal in a bag or even a waffle. Hope this helps a little... Julie
