Ice Lovers Flock to Havertown Rita's Free Day
Store owner gives Patch a crowd estimate as Rita's hands out free treats to celebrate the first day of spring.
Tom Esposito was smiling as he took a brief tour in the parking lot of the Rita's Water Ice shop he owns on Eagle Road just before 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The line had been steady as people flocked to the shop for Rita's annual First Day of Spring water ice giveaway. Some people Patch talked to in line were on their second Rita's shop of the day.
Charlie and Max, two brothers from Drexel Hill, were stopping in after already visiting another Rita's on Township Line Road. They were not the only ones Patch spotted at more than one Rita's on Tuesday.
Shortly before sunset Esposito told Patch his crews had already served up well over two thousand cups of free water ice. He expected that number could easily hit three thousand cups by closing time at 9 p.m..

How about free water ice the first day the temp hits 70? This Spring event is for "the birds", maybe not even them. It's too cold anymore this early to enjoy water ice!
