Havertown Man Shot Dead By Philly Police

Thomas Hennelly allegedly threatened the life of a police officer: media report.

The Philadelphia Police Department confirmed to the Haverford-Havertown Patch early Friday evening that 26-year-old Thomas Hennelly of Havertown was shot and killed by its department’s police officer.

While Philadelphia Police Department spokesman Lt. Ray Evers left for the day when Patch called, he did confirm to The Philadelphia Inquirer that Hennelly was shot by a Philadelphia police officer after he allegedly threaten the officer’s life.

The incident happened around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday when Hennelly allegedly drove a blue pickup truck on Broad Street near Oxford when the vehicle jumped a curb and into a parking lot where it struck parked cars and a Temple University student, Evers told the newspaper. The student was treated for an ankle injury at the university’s hospital.

"It was deliberate what he was doing. It definitely wasn't an accident," Evers was quoted as saying.

A male police officer who was near by approached Hennelly’s pickup truck when he allegedly struck the officer’s cruiser, where the officer fired two to three shots that hit the truck but missed the driver, Evers explained to the newspaper.

“The driver fled to 20th Street near Master, where he abandoned his truck on the sidewalk. He then ran through two vacant lots to the rear of a beer distributor, where he was cornered by a female officer. The man allegedly reached for an object and threatened the officer by yelling, ‘Step back, or I'm going to blow your brains out!’ Evers said,” the newspaper reported.

Evers stated that the female police officer took this as a threat and fired a couple of times at Hennelly, where he was struck twice—once in the upper left shoulder and once in the leg.

The female police officer did not see Hennelly—of the 800 block of Merion Avenue— with a gun and the police believe that he might have tossed it when he was fleeing before he was shot, Evers said to the newspaper, adding that a hypodermic needle was found in the front seat of the pickup truck.

He was pronounced dead at 11 a.m. at Hahnemann University Hospital, Evers stated to the newspaper.

The newspaper attributed Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey as saying the shooting was justified.  Internal Affairs is investigating the shooting.

That's the biggest load of crap. Who would really say that to a gun toting cop? No one should have died for running.

What Gun? The one the cop saw,at night while she was running down a dark street. She was already quoted in the newspapers that she never saw a gun,but he reached for an object. Deadmen tell no lies.

He was a f**king junkie. One less on the streets. If he didn't run he would be here to tell his side, but as we all know this is what junkies do. What about the temple student he hit?

Hmm... jumping a curb, running into parked cars, and almost hitting a person... and then running from police?!... last time I checked, that makes you a criminal in most states... there's no disputing those facts. I'm not saying the cops aren't full of it, but the guy def wasn't exactly an upstanding citizen.

I agree with Jim and yes people make mistakes but that's no reason to kill a man ! and if all the "junkies" in the world were dead there wouldn't be many people left on this planet also this police officer had to cover her story of why she fired it wouldve been different if he was killed in his vehicle because a vehicle is considered a weapon but he was on foot and he did not have a weapon why fire more than one shot ? why not shoot him in the leg? and that be that can't run with a bullet in your leg that bitch shot for the kill ! not how police officers are trained to handle a situation !

This is unbelieveable...obviously if there was a needle on the seat...and even if thats true...he wasn't sober so he obviously didn't do anything on purpose. Come on folks...he didn't deserve what he got. Nor did his family. To call someone a junkie and you don't even know for sure if he had a problem is just a disgrace. No gun was found...he didn't own a gun they said either...so that cop should be taken off the streets. Lets look into her record of shooting people. She is a rookie cop who thinks she has the right. She doesn't!!!! No one knows for sure...we all weren't there...but the cops story doesn't line up...many inconsistancys. Its all hear say from her to cover her steps herself...it wasn't justified. What a terrible thing for his family to be going through. Have a heart people! And I do agree with Michelle...she shot to kill...what kind of a cop is she???.....TAKE HER OFF THE STREETS!!!
