Wednesday marks the first day of spring, which is accompanied each year by a day of free water ice at Rita's locations in the Philadelphia area.

The company will give out free cups of its signature treat from noon to 9 p.m. Last year, 1.2 million were served at its locations nationwide, the company announced.

Rita's locations already open in the area include:

• 55 W. Eagle Road, Havertown (opened Feb. 22)

Another location is coming soon. Rita's at 500 West Chester Pike in Havertown is due to open Thursday, March 28, according to its website.

Other locations nearby include:

• 2105 Sproul Road, Broomall (opened Feb. 22)
• 958 County Line Road, Bryn Mawr (opened March 1)
• 5060 Township Line Road in Drexel Hill
