"Thirteen area Devon Prep students were recently inducted into the school’s chapter of the Quill and Scroll Society, the international honor society for high school journalists.

"During a ceremony in Calasanctius Hall, before family, friends and faculty, 10 seniors and three juniors were welcomed into the Society by Mr. Larry Theuer and Mrs. Elizabeth Eshleman, co-moderators of Devon Prep’s student newspaper the Devon Dialogue," the school's press release stated.

The new inductees include:

Seniors

  • Samuel S. Nardi of Havertown
  • Benjamin F. Senss of Havertown
  • Conrad A. and John R. Damstra of Newtown Square
  • Ryan T. Fulmer of Broomall
  • Stephen H. Kohlbrenner of Newtown Square
  • Matthew A. Kramer of Chester Springs
  • Matthew D. Swatski of Narberth
  • Alexander Teplyakov of Phoenixville
  • Nicholas R. van Schaijik of West Chester

Juniors

  • Kevin D. Fulmer of Broomall
  • Ryan M. Mattox of Lansdowne
  • Antonio D. Muscarella of Norristown

"Among the qualifications for membership into Devon Prep’s chapter of the society are: a GPA of 3.5 or higher in the last 2 semesters; superior work in some phase of high school journalism; submission of at least 2 quality articles in the last year; recommendation by the Devon Prep Quill and Scroll committee; and approval by the Society’s executive director.

"The Induction ceremony included the distribution of the badge of membership, honor cords for the seniors to wear at Commencement in June, and a candle lighting ceremony demonstrating the core values of the Society: Truth, Learning, Leadership, Loyalty, Initiative, Integrity, Judgment and Friendship," it stated.

“The ability that you have displayed in your work promises much more from you whether or not you enter the profession of journalism. But talent means little if it is not accompanied by industry,” Eshleman explained. “Membership into Quill and Scroll involves responsibility which you must not forget—the duty to devote yourself to the welfare of your school, and to any other group or community to which you may later belong. In a few years the obligation of leadership will fall to you, make certain that you are fully prepared and fully qualified to assume responsibility.”

"The Quill and Scroll International Honorary Society for High School Journalists was founded in 1926. The society recognizes individual student achievement in journalism and scholastic publication. Since the society’s founding more than 14,000 high schools in all 50 states and 45 foreign countries have been chartered," it stated.
