At Least 8 Job Offers Given At Nolan Painting Job Fair

More than 20 people showed up.

With many Americans out of work and unable to find a job in a poor economy, a little hope came to Havertown in the form of a job fair on Wednesday.

hosted a job fair from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday at its 181 West Hillcrest Ave. location. More than 20 people showed up—with a lemonade stand and soft pretzels to greet them at the entrance—to get an application, said owner and founder Kevin Nolan.

But there was only one qualification that Nolan was looking for.

“I want to hire someone with a (good) attitude and we’ll train him the skills,” he said.

Steve Nafranowicz, the CFO of the company, said there were a series of things an applicant had to do at the job fair, such as:

  • Fill out an application
  • Watch a video about the company in the conference room
  • Take a skill tests
  • And then have an interview

Some of the skill tests included putting sandpaper on a sander or properly wrapping up an extension cord, said Conal Mulreany, a field supervisor.

Jon Meyer, vice president of sales, explained that the skill tests help the company determine the placement of a candidate if he or she is hired.

A person can be hired as an apprentice, a painter or someone with strong experience can be a crew leader, who will oversee other workers, said Meyer.

“There are a lot of opportunities to grow in the company,” said Meyer.

And that seemed to be the case for Nafranowicz, who started at Nolan Paint 20 years ago as an apprentice and he is now the CFO, said both Meyer and Nolan.

Nolan said that he was hoping to hire between 10 to 12 people on Tuesday, but on Tuesday evening he emailed Patch that at least eight job offers were made.

Whoever accepts the full-time positions will also be receiving health insurance, a 4O1K plan, paid training and vacation time, Nolan and Meyer said.

But one of the most important qualifications, besides having a good attitude, is to be willing to volunteer to the community, said Nolan.

“We teach that there is a direct link with the community to what we do in the home,” Nolan explained.
